Calexico - ‘All The Pretty Horses’
I’ve always liked Calexico more as a backup band (Giant Sand, Iron & Wine, and especially Neko Case’s Blacklisted album) than on their own. But every once in a while they hit one out of the park. Unfortunately they bury their truly great songs on EPs and tour CDs. Their finest moment to my ears is their 2001 tour-only album ‘Aerocalexico’ which alternates between fresh originals, inspired covers (Nick Drake), and Arizona-specific found sounds (some old dude rambling about aliens and/or the Grand Canyon). This is the lead off track ‘All the Pretty Horses’, derived from an old slave lullaby, but they make it all their own. You can practically see the tumbleweeds rolling by.
